Food & Drink
At The Horse & Groom we serve food that is seasonal, ingredient-led and rooted in both classic and contemporary British cooking. Our menus feature produce from trusted local suppliers, with dishes that feel generous, well-constructed and full of flavour.
From small plates and starters like cured salmon, duck croquettes or potted crab, to heartier mains such as feather blade of beef, confit pork belly, pan-fried local fish or wild mushrooms with burrata, there’s something to suit every appetite. Our Sunday lunch is a highlight, with roast meats, all the trimmings and seasonal vegetables cooked in the spirit of a traditional British Sunday, and our dessert menu features comforting choices like sticky toffee pudding, chocolate delice and fruit tarts — classics that finish a meal beautifully.
Whether you’re joining us for breakfast, lunch, Sunday lunch or dinner, everything is prepared fresh each day, with a focus on sourcing the very best of what the region has to offer. To complement the food, we offer a carefully selected wine list, as well as a range of beers, aperitifs and after-dinner drinks.
The dining room provides a relaxed and welcoming backdrop, perfect for a midweek meal, a long weekend lunch or a special dinner.

Our chefs pride themselves on delivering quality, freshly prepared dishes with a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. From the flavoursome smoked salmon that you will find in our favourite sandwich, to hand-picked Selsey crab, succulent venison loin and homemade pies, our menus are bursting with the finest produce the area has to offer.
Start your day by enjoying our delicious Cumberland sausages at breakfast ahead of a day exploring the Downs, savour a traditional Sunday Lunch with all the trimmings or join us for a spot of dinner before a trip to the theatre. For the finishing touch, our carefully handpicked wine list and choice of beers ensures you can select the perfect drink to complement any occasion.
Elegantly refurbished, the dining room contains a variety of fascinating decorative features such as the Douglas fir pine pigeon holes housing terracotta greenhouse pots, Italian sardine pots and an amusing collection of vintage gardening books.
A collection of English, French and Swedish paintings from the early 20th century depicting food and flowers combine with contemporary pieces from local artists to create a warm kaleidoscope of colour. Mid-century still life oil paintings add to the room’s character.

Bar
Drink with us
You are guaranteed a friendly greeting and a warm smile at our cosy bar, which particularly comes alive during popular events such as the horseracing at Goodwood and the Festival of Speed where it’s the ideal stop-off after an action-packed day out.
As you enter, you are greeted by a beautiful equestrian portrait adorning the open brick fireplace to your left. Painted by the South Downs-based artist Andrew Hunt, this delightful piece has been inspired by the 18th century era – a period when the pub first opened its doors. A collection of horseshoes from the First World War serve as a reminder of the pub’s previous life as a farrier’s shop.
We offer an inviting selection of ales and beers on tap, including the award-winning ‘Summer Lightning’, and ‘Hophead’ – the golden pale ale from Sussex’s own Dark Star Brewing Company, based in nearby Partridge Green.
The revered actor and director Laurence Olivier, who founded the Chichester Festival Theatre, was a Horse & Groom regular in the 1960s, where he visited the bar to learn his lines. A small portrait donated by the theatre marks his much-loved seat.
Follow in the footsteps of Olivier and pop by for an evening G&T, or while away the time in front of our roaring log fire on a winter’s afternoon; whatever the occasion, we are always ready to welcome you.
Our bar plates are made for easy, relaxed eating - straightforward dishes that work well with a drink and showcase good local ingredients. You’ll find favourites such as crispy squid, smoked mackerel pâté, locally cured charcuterie, Goodwood cheeses, sausage rolls, and seasonal small plates that change through the year.
Some dishes are perfect for sharing, others for a quick bite before supper, but all are prepared with the same care as our main menu. Whether you’re stopping in for a pint or settling by the fire with friends, the bar menu offers plenty of simple, well-made things to enjoy.
