Ideally located just four miles west of Chichester and on the edge of the South Downs National Park, the Horse & Groom has been East Ashling’s public house for more than 200 years.
Popular with locals and visitors alike, our warm, homely pub and lodgings have been beautifully brought to life under the new owners, who have extensively refurbished this historic former blacksmith’s shop.
Amongst the decorative features you can discover are a striking metre-high bronze horse and jockey sculpture in the entrance hall, an 1840 chestnut serving table from the mountainous area of Andalusia in southern Spain, and an apple green baker’s counter bar that was bought from the Cognac region of France – it even has the original coin slot in the surface.
Your cultural journey continues into our dining room, where we serve wholesome dishes prepared with locally sourced produce against the backdrop of early 20th century paintings and contemporary art. A hand-crafted oak floor has been added to provide a suitably authentic feel.
Winter À la carte Menu
So many ingredients are at their prime right now and our new Winter À la carte Menu menu pays homage to that bounty.
Indulge in our updated, locally sourced menu, featuring dishes such as; Soup of the Day, Sussex Mayfield Vintage Twice Baked Soufflé, Heritage Beetroots and whipped goats cheese, all featuring the very best of Sussex produce.

Our Head Chef, Luke Cochran, has meticulously collaborated with our artisan suppliers to craft an array of Festive Deserts that celebrate the freshest ingredients this season.
Enjoy a delicious Dark Chocolate Delice or Cheesecake of the Day, all featuring the very best of Sussex produce.

Sunday Lunch Menu
Our Head Chef, Luke Cockram, has meticulously collaborated with our suppliers to craft an array of classic Sunday lunch plates that celebrate the freshest seasonal ingredients.
Enjoy Roast Beef with Seasonal Vegetables and Yorkshire puddings or Chargrilled Broccoli Steak with Confit Lemon Hummus, Golden Raisin Chimichurri and perhaps finish off with a Dark Chocolate Delice.
